Writers Reading 2011

A series of 2-hour Saturday afternoon workshops, analysing great writing to improve your own writing and reading. The tutor will select an extract of text and bring copies for participants.

Jeremy Fisher Jeremy has worked as editor, publishing manager, executive director of the Australian Society of Authors, and is now Senior Lecturer in Writing at UNE. His writing encompasses fiction, poetry, prose, reviews and critical articles. He has been published in India and Vietnam. His most recent book is Music from another Country, a novel about the humility of survival. 


    Session 2:   ANNE PENDER. The topic for this session will be biography.

Anne Pender Dr Anne Pender is Senior Lecturer in English and Theatre Studies at the University of New England. Before joining the staff at UNE Anne lectured in Australian Literature at King’s College London. Anne has recently completed a biography of Barry Humphries entitled One Man Show: The Stages of Barry Humphries. She is also the author of Christina Stead Satirist (2002) and co-editor of a book of essays about the life and work of the Australian actor, writer and director, Nick Enright, entitled Nick Enright: An Actor’s Playwright (2008). 


    Session 3:   JANE O'SULLIVAN.
Textual Interventions: pathways between reading and writing.
This session will discuss and explore some of the ways in which you can use your reading experiences to feed your writing and vice versa. We will look at Rob Pope's notion of writing 'textual interventions' as a means of engaging with an existing text (novel or short story) and also as a way of exploring new writing possibilities. Participants are asked to bring along one or two novels or short stories that they are quite familiar with and enjoy.

Jane O'Sullivan Jane O’Sullivan is an academic in the School of Arts at UNE, teaching and writing about narrative representation in film, television drama and prose fiction. Her PhD thesis focused on the novels of the twentieth-century British writer, John Fowles.

Venue
Unless otherwise stated, all events will be held at the New England Writers' Centre (NEWC), in the Neighbourhood Centre, 129 Rusden Street, Armidale (between the Council Building and the Town Hall).

Access
During opening hours and workshops, access is through the Cinders Lane car park (first door on left, in the corridor).

Parking
There is a one-hour parking restriction in the Cinders Lane carpark.
